Délka života od 12 do 16 let

Jaguár je často zaměňován s Leopardem. V závislosti na tom, o jaký poddruh se právě jedná má podobnou, hnědo-žlutou základní srst která je charakteristicky značkována tmavými rozetami. Jaguár má poměrně mohutnější hlavu a kratší nohy. Má i kratší ocas. Leopard nosí dlouhý ocas špičkou vzhůru. Velikostí a základním zbarvením se obě šelmy neliší.

Jaguár žije hlavně v Jižní Americe. V Severní Americe se s ním setkáváme jen v jižních státech. Způsobem života se podstatně neliší od svých ostatních příbuzných. Výborně skáče, plíží se a znamenitě šplhá po stromech. Podobně jako tygr se rád koupe a dokáže přeplavat i široké jihoamerické veletoky.

Jaguár útočí na člověka jen tehdy, je-li poraněn. Jinak se mu jako ostatní šelmy vyhne. Rád pobývá u vody, kde číhá na svou oblíbenou kořist, na velké hlodavce - kapybary. Jinak loví i jiné větší savce, jako jsou tapíři a velká domácí zvířata. Nepohrdne však ani ptáky a drobnými živočichy.

V přírodě se mezi jaguáry tu a tam vyskytnou černě zbarvené kusy - jako u levharta. To jsou nejvyhledávanější zvířata pro zoologické zahrady. V zajetí se chová jaguár stejně jako levhart. Mladá koťata snadno zkrotnou a dají se vodit na řemínku jako psi. Snadno se také rozmnožuje, a dokonce se i kříží s levhartem.

Velikost zvířat a jejich zbarvení se velice liší podle místa jejich výskytu. Jaguáři z hustých pralesů Amazonky jsou často až o polovinu menší a obvykle též tmavší než jejich příbuzní z více otevřených terénů.
